Talking Bikes - Hills
In my young age, I’ve discovered (I have to see if I’ve completely lost my mind or if you can totally relate to why I find it satisfying to go up 20% grades for the hell of it, when there’s easier grades if I go an extra mile out of my way.
Here, I’ve included picture of hill climbs (or ones I’ve descended from on rides) I have been up Dictionary Hill (La Presa/ E. Spring Valley) a few times, and took an outoftowner up it one time…. He wanted hills and I was happy to oblige, and the steepest street in San Diego City, Torrrance rd in Mission Hills, off of Pringle drive.
Along the way, there are those little steepies, in Encanto, like Oriole, Mulberry, 60th (OMG-40% measured by garmin, going north), 61st @ Imperial, Roswell, Paramount, Klauber, Rex, Brandywine…. There’s lots of little steeps in many places in SD….. sometimes, I just find them by accident. I’ve taken some pictures (they somewhat look the same, in grade), but I just have fun doing them.
| Street Name | Oriole St |
| Location (area) | W. Enacanto |
| Grade% (~) | 8-20% |
| Distance | .14 mi |
Experience: It’s a wedge . Kinda like the one on Orange in City Heights. |
|
| Street Name | 60th (NB) @ Radio |
| Location (area) | W. Encanto |
| Grade% (~) | 8-35% |
| Distance | .20 |
Experience: There is a pretty good drop going down into it. Radio is considered the “river bed”, so it’s all the way up from there. |
|
| Street Name | Eastridge |
| Location (area) | La Mesa |
| Grade% (~) | -2-13% |
| Distance | 1 mile |
| Experience: Begins at Murray Hill, and ends at Summit. Starts steep, ,declines in the middle. Steep past Willowsby to Cinnabar & Summit. Other little ridges come into Eastridge from the north… Cynthia, Rosario Willowby, Cinnabar, which is the steepest challenge in this group, but they are all 12-15% near the crest. Ball busters 1/3 to ½ mile at the most, at least for a little while. | |
| Street Name | Alto |
| Location (area) | Mt. Helix |
| Grade% (~) | 2-16% |
| Distance | ~3 miles. |
| Experience: Nice views at the top. One of the reasons I go east most days. West is downhill. J Steeper at the beginning , and past the “end of county maintained road” signs. | |
